By Bindiya Bakshi, A re-elected Andrews Labour Government will support our proud Sikh communities across the state as they celebrate in 2019the 550th birthday anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikh faith.

It was a historic day for 50,000 Sikhs in Victoria, Premier of Victoria Hon. Daniel Andrews had the first ever round table meeting with the leaders of the Sikh community with the initiative taken byStrategy co-ordinatorsLuckeeKohliand Sanjoo Kohli under the aegis of SASG (Sikhs Australia Strategy Group) on 26th Sep 2018.

Before the state elections to be held in November 2018, Hon Premier announced a grant of $200,000 for upcoming celebrations in 2019 of 550th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev ji. He added, this celebration should be biggest outside ofIndia and announced a Sikh March from the Parliament to Fed Square to commemorate the holy occasion.

Also, Mr Andrews committed afunding of $70,000 to Victorian Sikh Guruduaras Council to make next year’sVaisakhi celebrations at Fed Square bigger and better than ever.

Premier assured upcoming 32nd Annual Australian Sikh Games to be held in Melbourne to be the finest Sikh Games in Australia. Apart from recently announced $100,000 grant, he assured the community of more help soon.The games, expected to attract more than 3000 athletes and up to 90,000 spectators, are a celebration of Sikh culture and traditional games, while also promoting health and wellbeing.

Premier patiently listened to other issues raised by over 3 dozen representatives of the Sikh community and assured action on all.
