Hindi Included in National Curriculum After Victorian Government’S Submission

Australia India Society of Victoria thanks Minister Nicholas Kotsiras and his staff for championing the cause of Hindi.

Around March 2011, the Australian national curriculum had not included the Hindi language in the list of eleven top languages that were to be taught in Australian schools.

SahityaSandhya, the Australia India Society of Victoria, Mr. Moti Visa JP (Editor- Beyond India) and other Hindi lovers had requested the office of Victorian Minister Nicholas Kotsiras to take up the case of Hindi’s exclusion from National Curriculum.

Mr. Moti Visa had passionately raised the issue of Hindi with Minister Nicholas Kotsiras and Minister Martin Dixon at a Multicultural Media Conference organized by OMAC.

Liberal Coalition led Victorian Government had filed a submission based on community feedback to Julia Gillard led Federal Government to include Hindi in the national curriculum.

Minister Nicholas Kotsiras is the incumbent Chair of Victorian Government’s Ministerial Advisory Council for Languages. He passionately took up the case for Hindi’s inclusion in national curriculum.

Premier Ted Baillieu and Victorian Education Minister Martin Dixon also took up the case of Hindi with the federal government. After a long fight by various friends of Hindi across Australia, the federal government agreed to include Hindi in national curriculum.

Led by the Australia India Society of Victoria’s Executives, a few Hindi lovers met with Minister Nicholas Kotsiras to personally thank him and his hard working staff for taking up the case of Hindi, and getting Hindi included in Australian national curriculum.

The group included Dr Gurdip Aurora, Dr Manjula O’Connor, Abhishek Vivian Prasad, Neha Kolape,Vinayak Kolape, Surendra Sharma, Naresh Gupta, Shushma Gupta, Rehan Khan, Reshma Ali and  Hindi language students - Laksh & Arya

Mr Surendra Sharma said that Santa has come early for Australia’s Hindi lovers. Mr Sharma described this as biggest achievement of Baillieu government for Victoria’s Indian community. The group also showered heavy praises for Victorian Government advisor Mr. Nitin Gupta.

Minister Kotsiras said that now the ball is in the court of Indian community. They must make sure that sufficient number of studentsenroll for Hindi language classes across Australia to make sure that Hindi retains its place in national curriculum.

Minister Nicholas Kotsiras also congratulated the Australia India Society of Victoriain advance for its 50th year of incorporation making it the oldest Australia Indian organization in Australia.
