Jan 10, 2012
Pakistani cricket great Shahid Afridi was welcomed to Australia at a function hosted by the Melbourne Renegades at Etihad Stadium tonight.
Afridi was met by local Pakistani, Indian and South Asian community leaders to mark his arrival in Melbourne ahead of his season with the Renegades in the KFC T20 Big Bash League.
Renegades CEO Geoff Miles said he was delighted to host the group and officially welcome the world’s ICC-ranked #2 T20 all-rounder to Etihad Stadium – his cricketing home this summer.
“We’re really pleased to have Shahid and his Pakistan team-mate Abdul Razzaq as part of the Renegades’ squad,” Mr Miles said
“Tonight, Shahid received a fantastic welcome to Etihad Stadium from around 250 Pakistani, Indian and South Asian community members, who will no doubt keenly follow both Shahid and Abdul’s performance this season.”
Afridi’sfellow Pakistani all-rounder Abdul Razzaq will arrive in Melbourne tomorrow morning ahead of his summer with the Melbourne Renegades.
The Renegades kick off their KFC T20 Big Bash League campaign this Sunday night against the Strikers in Adelaide.
The team will return to Melbourne early next week to prepare for their first home game at Etihad Stadium on 22 December, against Perth Scorchers.
Mr Miles invited all cricket lovers to Etihad Stadium to watch the Renegades this summer, where a range of halal and vegetarian food will be on sale throughout the KFC T20 Big Bash League.
“To our knowledge, Etihad Stadium is the first major sporting venue in Australia to offer halal food options for spectators,” Mr Miles said.
“This is not only a reflection of the Renegades’ culturally diverse supporter base, but also an illustration ofthe value we place on inclusiveness.
“We thank Melbourne Stadiums Limited CEO Ian Collins, and Etihad Stadium caterers Delaware North Companies Australia, for embracing the new food options, which will also include curries served in the food court on level 1.
“We welcome all cricket lovers to support the Renegades and enjoy our brand of explosive cricket in the unique game-day atmosphere offered by Etihad Stadium this summer.”
