Electricity bills will be required to show the impact of the carbon tax for every household under plans unveiled by NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell.
Dec 10, 2011
Mr O’Farrell said consumers were entitled to know exactly how much of their bill was paying for Labor’s disastrous carbon tax.
The NSW Minister for Energy and Resources Chris Hartcher has written to the State’s
three major electricity retailers to inform them of the NSW Government’s plans and to consult on the exact information to be provided, covering the cost of renewable energy schemes including the bungled solar bonus scheme and the carbon tax.
The public have a right to know how much all these schemes and taxes are adding to their bills.
NSW Treasury estimates the carbon tax alone will add up to $498 a year to household bills – and families should be reminded about this impost every time their bill arrives.
Businesses will pay anything from $927 to $4,191 extra a year, depending on usage.
Labor’s carbon tax is going to devastate many businesses and we want to ensure they know the damage that is being caused by it.
Energy companies would be required to either :
• List the cost of the carbon tax separately on each bill; or,
• Put a general estimate of the cost of the carbon tax on householders on each bill.
The general message would be along the lines of: “The carbon tax, combined with other green energy schemes and subsidies, contributes around $92 to a typical household’s quarterly bill”. There is already widespread opposition to Labor’s carbon tax.
We want to make sure families know exactly how much it is adding to their power bills.
Only then will they be able to determine whether they are getting adequate compensation from the Federal Government for the carbon tax.
We have always said the carbon tax will cost jobs and lead to a massive increase in power bills.
The NSW Government is not going to allow Federal Labor to hit families with a big increase in power bills and wipe their hands of it.
We are going to hold them to account for this crippling and unfair tax which is going to cause so much anguish for power users around the State.
