Namaste and Shubh Diwali

Nov 1, 2011

Once again Diwali is here. And it was great to join Victoria’s Indian community in celebrating Diwali at the Sandown Park and Federation Square. It was great to see the cultural performances, meet and greet with the community members, and make many new friends.

The Victorian government is proud to support various Diwali celebrations across the State, and we look forward to bigger and more colourful Diwali celebrations in future years.

We have started working on implementing the Coalition’s Bollywood Policy. The tenders are now open for staging the Bollywood Film Festival in 2012, 2013 and 2014. We will keep the community updated about the developments as the policy goes forward.

The Victorian government is also working hard to improve road safety. Road safety is an issue for everyone, but new and emerging communities like our Victorian Indian community needs to be more informed about the road safety measures. Moving to a new country it can take time to get used to the new driving environment, the driving laws and road safety measures.

And what better place to reinforce road safety messages than on number plates. New safety message are to be selected after extensive consultation with the Victorian community. We want to hear from Victorians across the state – drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, children – this is an issue that affects us all.

It is about getting people thinking and talking about how to improve road safety. We know that continual reminders and reinforcing messages are an important part of road safety public education.

The new number plates will effectively mean hundreds of thousands of reminders to drive safely on our roads every day. I invite Victorians to start submitting their ideas at www.premier.vic.gov.au

The announcement follows the launch of the recent regionally-targeted campaign Talk the Toll Down, which was supported by 60 regional editors and their newspapers around Victoria.

We must keep the community talking and thinking about road safety. It’s every road user’s responsibility, to take care on the roads and through this initiative, we can all talk the toll down in Victoria.

We’ve lost over 218 lives on our roads already this year. That’s many grieving families, friends and colleagues. And that road toll doesn’t take into account, thousands of people who have been seriously injured on our roads so far in 2011. The new number plates are expected to roll out in Victoria next year.

Enjoy the Diwali festivities and Drive Safe.
